Cullowhee, N.C. – Just a matter of hours before opening its 2016 football season on Saturday evening at East Carolina, the Western Carolina Catamounts and fifth-year head coach Mark Speir announced their four team captains as voted on by the squad. Two seniors in offensive lineman Ethan James and defensive back Fred Payne, as well as a pair of juniors in linebacker Daniel Riddle and tailback Detrez Newsome were each selected by their peers.

Cullowhee, N.C. – Western Carolina head baseball coach Bobby Moranda has completed his 2016-17 coaching staff as the Catamounts prepare to open their annual fall drills. Second-year assistant coach Brock Doud, who spent the 2016 championship season as a volunteer assistant, has been elevated to a full-time role, while Kyle Dean has joined the staff as the volunteer coach.
